The Antarctic worm with teeth that will haunt your dreams

A strange and captivating marine worm has recently taken the internet by storm, and once you see it, you’ll understand why.

This unusual creature, called Eulagisca gigantea, seems more at home in a sci-fi thriller than in the icy waters of Antarctica.

With its dazzling golden bristles and its mouth lined with sharp teeth, it almost looks like a holiday decoration that went terribly wrong.

But believe it or not, this extraordinary worm has been residing in the Southern Ocean for years—only now is it gaining attention thanks to social media.

Meet Eulagisca gigantea

So, what makes this worm so remarkable? First, it measures about 8 inches in length (roughly the size of a banana) and has a head that’s actually a retractable throat.

When it’s time to feed, the throat extends outward, exposing sharp teeth, showing that this worm is not just a passive observer—it’s a predator. The worm uses this extendable part to scavenge or even hunt smaller marine creatures.

Its golden bristles serve a purpose beyond appearance. They might assist in swimming, crawling on the seafloor, or even act as a defense mechanism. However, much remains unknown about Eulagisca gigantea as scientists have only briefly studied it since its discovery in 1939.
