Recently, a TikTok user shed light on this mystery after responding to a follower’s question about the meaning of “WC.” The clip, which garnered over 3,500 views, revealed the historical origins of the term.
What Does “WC” Stand For?
According to the TikToker, before indoor plumbing became widespread, homes had a separate room for bathing—hence the term “bathroom.” However, toilets were originally placed outside, and when indoor plumbing was introduced, the most convenient place to install a toilet was inside a small closet-like space. This led to the term “water closet,” abbreviated as “WC,” which has been in use since the 1870s.
The revelation sparked a wave of reactions online, with many users admitting they had never questioned the meaning of “WC.” One person commented, “I’ve been seeing this sign for years but never thought to look it up.” Another added, “I was today years old when I learned what WC stands for.”
