Tucker Carlson’s Father, Richard “Dick” Carlson, Passes Away at 82
Tucker Carlson, the conservative commentator and former Fox News host, announced on X that his father, Richard “Dick” Warner Carlson, has passed away. Describing him as “the toughest person in the world,” Carlson shared that his father died at home in Boca Grande, Florida, surrounded by his children.

Dick Carlson, born on February 10, 1941, in Massachusetts, had a remarkable life journey. Abandoned at a Boston orphanage by his 15-year-old Swedish-speaking mother, he spent his childhood moving through foster care before being adopted. At 17, he was expelled from school and enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps.
He started his career as a reporter before transitioning into government roles, serving as Director of Voice of America under President Ronald Reagan and later as U.S. Ambassador to the Seychelles under President George H.W. Bush in the early 1990s.
In his tribute, Tucker Carlson highlighted his father’s love for books and dogs, writing:
“He was a free thinker and a compulsive book reader, including at red lights. He left a library of thousands of books, most dog-eared and filled with marginalia. His reading and life experiences convinced him that God is real.”
Carlson also described his father as a nonjudgmental man who had traveled extensively and met world leaders, recalling that he always spoke of them with “amused affection.”
Dick Carlson was a single father, raising his sons alone after his first wife left for Europe and never returned. He often took his children on reporting trips and taught them about history, literature, and politics over dinner conversations.
In 1979, he married Patricia Swanson, heir to the Swanson Foods fortune. They remained together for 44 years until her passing sixteen months ago, a loss he mourned deeply.

“He refused all painkillers to the end and left this world with dignity and clarity, holding the hands of his children with his dogs at his feet,” Tucker wrote.
Richard “Dick” Carlson is survived by his two sons, five grandchildren, and daughter-in-law.
